The students benefit from NYU School of Medicine’s Curriculum for the 21st Century, a spiral learning process based on patient-centered disease “pillars” and intertwining basic science with direct patient care. Pillars, illustration, spiral learning, staircases NYU School of Medicine turn to an innovative “spiral” curriculum, employing “pillars” — different medicine areas — as central themes. Over their four years, students will absorb increasingly sophisticated information about each pillar and the diseases associated with it, producing an upward spiral of learning. In addition to a disease’s developmental, cellular, and molecular biology, pillars will cover genetics, nutrition, epidemiology, imaging, informatics, preventive health, biomedical ethics, and health disparities among different populations.
